Florida Access Network Statement on Election Results
FLORIDA—With Donald Trump regaining the presidency and Florida’s Amendment 4—a measure meant to restore abortion rights in the state—falling just short of the 60% needed to pass, Floridians will continue to face immeasurable obstacles to accessing safe and legal abortion care.
Stephanie Loraine Piñeiro, MSW, Executive Director of Florida Access Network (FAN), issued the following statement in response to last night’s election results:
“As we mourn the continued erosion of reproductive rights in Florida, we are also buoyed by the strength of Floridians who have overwhelmingly shown their support for abortion access. The support for Amendment 4—though just shy of the required threshold—demonstrates a clear commitment by our communities to protect abortion access in our state. This road forward will not be easy, but our resolve is unbreakable.
“We are inspired by the success of other states that passed amendments to protect reproductive rights, including Missouri, New York, Colorado, and Maryland. These victories show us that progress is possible when communities come together to fight for justice.
“Elections come and go—but people always need safe access to abortion. FAN and other abortion funds around the country know this better than anyone. And we have the infrastructure, determination, and know-how to meet the needs of our communities in times of crisis.
“Now, more than ever, it’s essential to support the organizations that working tirelessly to ensure abortion care is accessible to Floridians. We are here to provide mutual aid, educational resources, and direct abortion funding, ensuring that reproductive care remains within reach. Our commitment is unwavering, and as always, we will continue supporting our community with resilience and care. We are all we’ve got.”
With Donald Trump’s victory, Florida will likely face further clinic closures, forcing people to travel even greater distances—sometimes over 1,000 miles—or remain pregnant against their will. And yet, over six million Florida voters supported Amendment 4, aiming to enshrine abortion access in the state constitution. While it received approximately 57 percent of the vote, it fell just short of the 60 percent threshold established by a constitutional amendment in 2006—which ironically passed with only 57 percent support. This discrepancy underscores the importance of continued advocacy and legislative reform to secure the rights Floridians have shown they want to protect.
Last month, the Florida Access Network (FAN) launched a bold campaign across Florida, displaying seven billboards with pro-abortion messages in North and Central Florida. The billboards alone reached 5.6 million impressions and drew widespread support—FAN saw its support base expand by over 3,000 new followers and members, underscoring the strength and solidarity behind reproductive justice in Florida.
