Mifepristone is here to stay: SCOTUS Shuts Down Abortion Pill Case

While the Supreme Court rejected attempts by anti-abortion extremists to further restrict access to abortion with pills, we know this isn’t the end of their heartless crusade to deny us our freedom and bodily autonomy. This decision—which never should have been before the Supreme Court in the first place—comes as we mark 43 days since an abortion ban took effect in Florida, the biggest shift in the abortion access landscape since this same court overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago. Already, Florida Access Network callers have been deeply impacted by this racist ban—at least half of our callers have been forced to leave the state and travel an average of 900 miles one way for their abortion care, and the cost to support them is three times greater than before the ban. The harm will continue to fall hardest on Black, brown, Indigenous, Latinx and undocumented people, those living with disabilities and queer communities, all who already struggle to access healthcare due to economic disparities, medical racism and are more at risk for being criminalized for their pregnancy outcomes. Stephanie Loraine, Executive Director of Florida Access Network, says:

“Today’s SCOTUS decision means Mifeprestone remains legal - for now. Make no mistake, this decision is not the end of ongoing attempts to further erode abortion access in the USA. We deserve decriminalized access to all abortion options, including abortion by pills, a method used globally to safely end pregnancy and manage miscarriage. Florida Access Network remains committed to building communities where all pregnancy outcomes, including abortions, are valued and protected - we deserve reproductive justice.“ - Stephanie Loraine Piñeiro, Executive Director of Florida Access Network.

In the face of these ongoing, overlapping oppressions, Florida Access Network stands unwavering on the frontlines, aiding those navigating restrictions. We will continue to share resources with our community about the safety of medication abortion, and we will continue to adapt and mobilize in real-time as the systems around us continue to fail members of our community, especially queer folks and people of color. Florida Access Network, alongside the 100 abortion funds in communities across the country, remains committed to a future where all people have the power and resources to care for and affirm their bodies, identities, and health for themselves and their families.
