Florida Access Network responds to Politico’s leaked draft SCOTUS decision
Abortion in Florida will remain legal if Roe v. Wade is overturned in June despite this draft opinion
(Orlando, FL) - The Florida Access Network, a nonprofit abortion fund that advocates for reproductive justice and provides practical support for abortion remains fiercely committed to abortion access. On May 3rd, 2022 Politico published a leaked draft Supreme Court majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that explicitly overturns Roe v. Wade. The draft majority opinion, written by Justice Alito, openly overrules Roe and Casey, stating that “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start” and “we hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled.” Across the country, we have seen abortion access rolled back with extreme bans and restrictions. While these extremists are trying to undermine our human rights, we also know that the movement to support liberate abortion is incredibly strong – and growing stronger by the day.
“Abortion will remain legal in Florida if Roe v. Wade is overturned in June despite this draft opinion and abortion access organizations will continue to make abortions access a reality through community care”
- Julia Desangles, Co-Executive Director of Florida Access Network
Florida Access Network remains fiercely committed to Floridians abortion access and will continue fund abortion and push back against changes to the abortion access landscape. Hostile states like Florida may try to further ban abortion very soon, but today, ABORTION IS STILL LEGAL in Florida and will remain legal if Roe is overturned. Abortion funds, clinics, and support networks are here to help Floridians navigate barriers to abortion access.
“We will continue to push back on abortion stigma to ensure people who have abortions feel loved, affirmed and tangibly supported. Abortion bans are designed to shame people, providers, and abortion care workers into silence. But we stand firm that abortion is nothing to be ashamed of, with or without this restrictions in place, Florida Access Network will continue doing what we’ve always done: caring for our clients with compassion, supporting Floridians navigating abortion care, and disrupting abortion stigma. ”
- Stephanie Loraine , Co-Executive Director of Florida Access Network
