Florida Access Network denounces the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade
Abortion in Florida remains legal even with the overturn of Roe v. Wade
(Orlando, FL) - The Florida Access Network (FAN), a nonprofit organization that advocates that funds abortion, provides practical support and advocates for reproductive justice remains fiercely committed to abortion access. FAN strongly condemns the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS). On June 24, 2022, SCOTUS published their decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Florida Access Network will continue operating within the confines of the law and wants to start this statement by reminding folks of the words of Renee Sherman Bracey: “Everyone loves someone who had an abortion.”
“Too many people in the United States already face compounded obstacles to abortion care because of systemic injustices in their state. The overturn of Roe v. Wade pushes care completely out of reach for millions. Everyone must be trusted to make their own pregnancy decisions, free from political interference. Abortion will remain legal in Florida with Roe v. Wade overturned despite this blow to human rights and abortion access organizations will continue to make abortions access a reality through community care.”
- Julia Desangles, Florida Access Network, Co-Executive Director.
With the overturn of Roe, abortion in Florida remains legal through the state constitutional right to privacy. However, Florida still faces the 15 week abortion ban going into place July 1st, 2022. With this restriction in place, people who need abortions in Florida will be forced to travel out-of-state for their care. This is unrealistic, unaffordable, and incredibly cruel and Floridian’s shoulder that burden. Our clients are the people who have to take two days off from work, the ones who have to find child care— because the majority of people who have abortions are already parents — and the ones who have to buy the gas for two trips made mandatory by the 24-hour waiting period. Our clients have to rearrange their life to access healthcare and that creates unnecessary stigma and shame.
“We will continue to push back on abortion stigma to ensure people who have abortions feel loved, affirmed and tangibly supported. Abortion bans are designed to shame people, providers, and abortion care workers into silence. We stand firm that abortion is nothing to be ashamed of and within the confines of the law, Florida Access Network will continue doing what we’ve always done: caring for our clients with compassion, funding Floridians navigating abortion care, and disrupting abortion stigma.”
